Firstly, congratulations to Maddy Carens who was our 'Athlete of the week' for our first week of summer training. For a photo of Maddy visit our facebook page. Maddy has been taking part in our speed and strength training for soccer in Charleston, SC.

I am sure you have all been watching the world cup so far and enjoying the great spectacle. Although exciting and dramatic, the first few games are often very tight afares. Germany being the only real standouts so far. There is very little to choose from all teams, games often won, lost or drawn by errors or mistakes (Clint Dempsey I am sure would agree with me there.) You only have to look at the goal keeper mistakes and defensive errors already to see how close games are decided.

A reason for these tight games are that teams have been planning this first game for many months and they want to get off to a good start... or at least not lose. This can been seen as a negative way of playing but there are no secrets in todays game and teams are very evenly matched and don't want to give anything away to their rivals. I am sure as we get further into the tournament things will start to open up a bit more and teams will start taking more risks. So far not one team has come from behind to win a game, we are only 4 days in though.

It just goes to show that at this level small things change games. Whether a mistake or touch of brilliance it is the minute of details that determine failure or victory. That is why training and especially speed training can be so important at the youth level. That split second difference can mean getting to the ball or not as already shown in this world cup.

Enjoy the next few days as the Brasilians and Spanish have their first games.
