The goal that never was is good for this country
Date of post -Monday, June 21, 2010

If you have not been living in a hole the past few days then I am sure you have seen over a hundred repeats of the USA goal that never was. The referees decision was one of the worst I have ever seen, especially during a world cup. It rivals Graham Polls three yellow cards in the last world cup.

However, I think it will be a blessing in disguise for this country. It has everyone talking about it. I live in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, a beach town, a growing soccer community and everyone and his dog have an opinion of the goal. It has really got the 'non soccer' public talking about it and interested in the world cup. Which is fantastic for soccer fanatics in the states. Soccer is becoming popular. I was training an elderly lady the other day and she was going crazy at that "ridiculous decision."

The USA have to get through the next round, they just have to. For the sport to grow in this country they need to prolong the hype and the interest. All Americans are now behind the team 100% and are tuned into supporting their country in the world cup. Twice as many Americans are watching this world cup compared to 2006. That stat alone shows the difference in support over here. I think the coverage is excellent and it is exactly what this country needed for soccer to become more popular.

So I think the decision could be a good thing in the long run, providing they beat Algeria on Wednesday. I will be hoping the US get the job done and beat the Algerians and get what they deserve.

On another note I would just like to congratulate Isabelle Varnado for being our athlete of the week for speed and strength training here in Mount Pleasant for our second week of training. Isabelle showed great enthusiasm for the speed training and excelled in the agility exercises. Well done Isabelle keep up the good work.
